Do you
know a high-performing, second-stage Michigan company worth
watching? Nominations are being accepted for the 2007 Michigan
50 Companies to Watch awards. A joint program of the
Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Michigan Small
Business and Technology Development Center with support from
the Edward Lowe Foundation, these awards celebrate companies
whose performance in the marketplace, innovative products,
unique processes or philanthropic actions make them worth
watching as the next generation of successful companies in
Michigan. The
nomination form is online if you have a company to
nominate - the deadline is November 3.
Dow
Corning Corporation recently received tax abatements from
the City of Midland on a combination of new projects and
infrastructure improvements at the Midland site. In total, the
projects will invest $52.7 million in Midland and will
create and retain 290 jobs. The projects are expected to
create 803 spin-off jobs with a total estimated income
generation of $24.1 million. Congratulations to Dow Corning as
they continue to grow their operations, and many thanks to the
City of Midland for their pro-business focus and dedication to
retaining quality jobs in Midland.
It's
official: The Great Lakes Loons, Mid-Michigan's minor
league baseball team, are the Class A affiliate of the Los
Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers are known for their superior
player development in the Minor League Baseball system, having
been ranked second among 30 teams in organizational talent
rankings by Baseball America for the last three years. They
are considered one of the greatest Major League Baseball
franchises of all time. Visit

MidMichigan Medical Center has received state
approval to offer open-heart surgery and elective
angioplasty by next summer, bringing 50 to 100 new jobs to
the hospital for doctors, nurses, technicians and office
staff. MidMichigan began offering angioplasty on an emergency
basis last year, but now may offer it as an elective
procedure. The new services are expected to be up and running

The
WE-DO (Women's Economic Development Outreach) tour
across Michigan will begin with an October 16 stop in
Troy. The $25 seminars are great events for creating
connections and building business among women entrepreneurs.

to Independence, a half-day workshop offered by
Michigan State University’s Product Center. The workshops will
be held in five different locations throughout the state of
Michigan beginning in November.

We are pleased to share that Solidica, Inc., has received a
grant through Michigan's 21st Century Jobs Fund. Although
Solidica is based in Ann Arbor, the grant is a win for our
region as well, since Solidica is collaborating closely with
Saginaw Valley State University and Michigan Molecular
Institute to put the grant to use developing medical device
technology. In addition, Solidica is funded through Midland's
venture capital firm, North Coast Technology Investors. Also,
don't miss the Midland companies that have received Department
of Defense grants (detailed below) as well as the SBIR/STTR
grant seminar on October 18 offered by Biotechnology Business
Consultants.
For those people eager to learn about business planning and
financing, the Michigan Small Business and Technology
Development Center is once again holding multiple seminars in
the early part of October. Take good note of the articles

Monies Slated for Midland Tomorrow Client
Companies |
|
Four Midland Tomorrow client companies and partners are set
to receive grants through an annual Department of Defense
appropriations bill that is set to be approved by both the
House and Senate this week. The bill contains millions of
dollars in project monies. Central Michigan University, Dow
Corning Corporation, Michigan Molecular Institute and Pilgrim
Technology are among the local companies receiving grants.

Solidica
Receives 21st Century Jobs Fund Grant |
|
Solidica, Inc., a rapidly growing, venture
capital-backed technology company based in Ann Arbor, has
received $1.3 million in funding over three years
through Michigan’s 21st Century Jobs Fund, an initiative of
the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The funding
will allow them to adapt their ultrasonic consolidation
technology to manufacture embedded, sensor-based medical
devices. Backed by North Coast Technology Investors, a venture
capital firm with offices in Midland and Ann Arbor, Solidica
will work closely with the Rapid Prototyping Center at Saginaw
Valley State University to carry their medical device program
to fruition. |

Health Named One of America’s Best Employers |

MidMichigan Health has been named one of America's
best employers for mature workers, according to AARP's
annual survey of "Best Employers for Workers over 50."
MidMichigan, which ranked 34 among the 50 companies listed, is
one of four Michigan employers to be honored with this
distinction by AARP this year. |

Business Federal Grant (SBIR/STTR) Seminar at Northwood
October 18 |
|
Each year, the Small Business Innovation Research program
(SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer program (STTR)
provide more than $2 billion to small businesses developing
technology throughout the country. In partnership with the Mt.
Pleasant Smart Zone, Ann Arbor-based Biotechnology Business
Consultants (BBC) is holding a 90-minute SBIR/STTR
familiarization seminar on October 18th in Midland. The
seminar will be held at Northwood University to attract
attendees from across the Mid-Michigan region. You will leave
with enough information to determine if you want to pursue
this funding and attend subsequent intensive training with
BBC. |

The Center For Manufacturing Improvement, Saginaw Valley
State University and the Michigan Manufacturing Technology
Center, in conjunction with the Center for Automotive Research
of Ann Arbor, are hosting a dinner meeting on October 17. Mr.
Tom Hasse of MMTC will present details of how our Michigan
economy is affected by the on-going market share loss of Ford
and General Motors and the impact those reductions are having,
and will continue to have, on the supplier base. You will see
how a three-point program of Assessment, Training, and
Custom Consultation can launch a market diversification
program that will result in at least 25 potential new
customers for each manufacturer that takes advantage of this
program. |
