Dear Ryan,
With the colder temperatures of fall come a wave of
services to move small businesses and entrepreneurs toward
greater productivity and success. On October 18, Midland
Tomorrow, Biotechnology Business Consultants and Northwood
University hosted a seminar on SBIR and STTR grants.
(Note the grant solicitation deadlines in the article below.)
If you missed the seminar, watch our newsletter for other
opportunities to learn about and apply for these grants. Note
also the seminar on November 2 hosted by the MidMichigan
Innovation Center, entitled "Leadership in a Turbulent
World." The seminar explores how to lead for greatest
success in a global environment. And, of course, the
MI-SBTDC's Entrepreneur Orientation seminars are being
held in all three Tri-Cities over the coming weeks. Attendance
is encouraged.
The last month has seen several other important events for
Midland Tomorrow. Our 2006 Awards Breakfast was a great
success, with over 300 attendees registered to celebrate with
us as nine businesses and individuals received awards for
their outstanding contributions to Midland's economy and
quality of life. If you weren't able to attend, see the
article below to access a downloadable copy of the event
presentation.
But the big news has come to us from the State of Michigan:
the RSPPA2 program, jointly administered by Michigan
State University and Midland Tomorrow with the support of many
regional partners, has received $1.1 million in funding
from the 21st Century Jobs Fund. This funding allows us to
continue the RSPPA program to provide seed funding, support
and siting assistance to startup life science companies. We
are also able to expand the program to employ a dedicated
"technology scout" to help researchers commercialize their
technology. See the story below for all the details.
And, of course, don't forget to check the News in
Brief section for several interesting items. Are
entrepreneurs born or bred? Where do startups get their money?
Where can you find employment size data and federal compliance
information? The answers are there! And if you have any
suggestions for a local nominee for the 2007 Michigan 50
Companies to Watch, make sure to let us know as
soon as possible - the deadline for nomination is November 17!

Avoid the Entrepreneurial Valley of
Death |
|
Sherman McCorkle, President and CEO of Technology Ventures
Corporation, says the startup of an entrepreneurial company
falls into three stages: technology creation, product
development and successful commercialization. Lack of funding,
problems with manufacturing, scale-up issues and intellectual
property concerns can all combine to turn the product
development stage into the "valley of death" for a potential
new technology startup company. To help entrepreneurs gain the
winning edge, McCorkle offers eight tips for crossing the
"valley" safely. |
