News in Brief

The Saginaw Valley Manufacturer's Association will host a dinner on March 14 with guest speaker Kristin Stehouwer, Ph.D., of Northwestern Michigan College. Her speech, entitled "How to Compete in Our Low-Cost World Market," will discuss how U.S. business can compete with foreign business environments that offer government incentives and less regulation, lack of intellectual property protection and forgiven loans, among other factors. More information on the discussion and registration information are available here.

PRE-RELEASE INFORMATION: Four Midland small businesses are among Michigan's 50 Companies to Watch for 2006. Sponsored by the Edward Lowe Foundation, the 50 Companies to Watch will be revealed at the second annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business event on Wednesday, April 19 in Lansing.

Over $5.7 million is currently available from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality that can be used to implement ?green? building and site development and LEED construction. Proposals are due March 9, 2006.

Dear Ryan,

Grant opportunities abound this month for a variety of businesses. We cover "green" businesses in the link on the left sidebar, but there are also opportunities for a wide range of federal grants as well as USDA value-added producer grants and product development fact sheets for agribusinesses. And, as you read earlier this month, the Tri-County region is sharing in a grant of its own: $15 million through the federal WIRED program came to the thirteen-county Mid-Michigan region.

It seems like April and its (relatively) warmer weather will never arrive, but they're coming - and that means the biannual Legislative Luncheon, co-sponsored by Midland Tomorrow and the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce, is coming as well. This year, we have divided the two Luncheons into State and federal luncheons so each group of legislators will have time to focus on their specific areas. See below for more - and don't forget to register early as space is limited!

Also, since Scott Walker was promoted to Executive Director, Midland Tomorrow is seeking a new Economic Development Manager. See the link at left or below for more information. Applications are due by March 15, 2006.
