Dear Ryan,
The biggest news to hit Midland - and the Tri-County region
- in the last month came this week as Dr. David Garabrandt and
his research team from the University of Michigan revealed the
results of their dioxin exposure study. See the story below
for more information, including a link to the study and all
related information in downloadable format. On Thursday,
August 31 at 7:30 a.m., Dr. Alfred Franzblau with the dioxin
exposure study team will be presenting the study results and
next steps at the Midland Community Center. Please contact
us (by email or by
calling 989-839-0340) to attend his talk. It is important that
we as a community understand this study to ensure sound
science is applied in our regulatory processes.
Meanwhile, seminars throughout the region are helping small
businesses and entrepreneurs train to excel. The Small
Business and Technology Development Center is offering their
concise, useful and free business plan development seminars in
Midland and Saginaw. Saginaw Valley State University is
hosting a seminar on automotive industry opportunities
overseas, while CMU will host Congressman Dave Camp's forum to
connect businesses with federal agencies. All the
opportunities are free to attend.
In addition, Midland Tomorrow's annual Awards Breakfast is
less than two months away. Invitations will be sent out and
registration will become available within the next month.
There are always opportunities for businesses and individuals
who wish to sponsor the event - see below for more! Help us
make this the best possible experience to honor the
businesses, organizations and individuals who give so much to
this community.

Dioxin Exposure Study Released |
|
The University of Michigan dioxin research team, led by Dr.
David H. Garabrant, has released the results of their
multi-year dioxin exposure study. The study concluded that age
and diet have much more impact on bloodborne dioxin levels
than soil contamination, and living downwind of Dow Chemical
Michigan Operations in Midland has no effect on these levels.
Although dioxin levels in the blood of residents in the
Tittabawassee River floodplain were about seven parts per
trillion higher than those of residents in Jackson/Calhoun
counties, geography and soil contamination (as opposed to age,
diet, body mass index and other lifestyle factors) accounted
for only one percent of the variation. |

Entrepreneurs: Statewide Business
Survey |
|
The Michigan Small Business and Technology Development
Center assists entrepreneurs statewide by providing
counseling, training, and market research. To improve their
services and better assist small businesses in Michigan, they
would like to know more about entrepreneurs and the business
issues they face today. If you would like to assist the SBTDC
by offering your thoughts on the state's entrepreneurial
environment, you can do so by completing a short 15-20 minute
online survey. |
