A Federal Reserve report shows that production at U.S. factories, mines and utilities grew at a faster pace last month and manufacturers were the busiest in more than five years. The 0.6 percent increase in production followed a 0.5 percent gain in February, the Fed said in Washington. The share of industrial capacity in use rose to 81.3 percent, the highest since September 2000, from 81 percent. The Commerce Department reported that the U.S. trade gap narrowed in February. The report shows imports outweighed exports by $65.7 billion, down from the revised $68.6 billion level seen in January. Despite the drop, it was still the third-highest gap on record.

Dear Ryan,

Congratulations go out this month to Midland County's four winners of Michigan 50 Companies to Watch status: AEGIS Environments; The Apothecary Shoppe Pharmacies; Dendritech, Inc.; and Pilgrim Technology, LLC. We celebrate their achievements as second-stage technology companies with rapid growth and great potential, and we hold them up as good examples of the many dedicated technology entrepreneurs in Midland.

Midland has recently seen the stage set for large-scale economic development with the Governor's approval to create a Renaissance Zone within Midland County. On the local level, Dow Corning and Caltech Industries have both announced expansions to their businesses. And, the 13-county Mid-Michigan region's progress in utilizing monies from the federal WIRED grant will assist Midland County entrepreneurs as well. The 2006 State Legislative Luncheon, hosted on April 28th by Midland Tomorrow and the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce, will give citizens the opportunity to discuss these and other issues with our state legislators.

May is coming soon, and with it a plethora of training opportunities covering business plans, entrepreneurial skills, financing and more. Read the articles below to learn more about how assistance from the experts can help you take your business to the next level.
